JACK: “Mom, I got to vote today and I’m not even 18!.”
ME: “Really? Awesome!”
JACK: “Yeah, the first grade had our own election. Mitt Romney won, 89 to 52 votes.”
ME: “Ahh, that’s great! What did you learn about the candidates? Was the voting pretty random or were there red classrooms and blue classrooms? Did anyone try to coerce you to vote against your beliefs? Any candidates campaigning at the polling places? What about Black Panthers? Did you feel safe casting your ballot?
JACK: “Well, Miss Judy’s classroom is white and there is a picture of a lizard on the wall.”
ME: “Did the lizard influence your vote in any way?”
JACK: “This is why I don’t tell you more about what we do at school.”
